Is Uganda safe for tourists?

Uganda is absolutely safe for anyone; locals, neighbors, visitors, those passing through, part time residents, and certainly of the tourists. The country is safe; it has a good security system, the people are warm, friendly and welcoming; you’re definitely in good company.

However, the question travelers are constantly asking in this COVID-19 era is, is Uganda safe enough for me to explore and not catch the coronavirus?

Truthfully we don’t know whether you will catch the virus in Uganda or not; but we know that the country has enforced several COVID-19 preventive measures that have greatly reduced the spread of the virus among people.

Just like the rest of the world, Uganda is still registering COVID-19 cases here and there but with adherence to the COVID-19 preventive measures the country has managed to return to almost 80% normalcy with all borders open and the country welcoming tourists to relish its unique beauty.

The COVID-19 preventive measures enforced in the country include mandatory wearing of a face mask especially when in public, maintaining a 2 meter social distance between persons, washing your hands with soap regularly or sanitising, isolating when you feel ill and seeking medical attention as soon as possible.

The country is also continuing to carry out extensive COVID-19 vaccination for its citizens and as of 25thSeptember 2021,  the ministry of health records over 1,807,767 people have received the COVID-19 vaccine so far; Uganda hopes to vaccinate 4.8 million people by December 2021.

The country is constantly carrying out COVID-19 tests on all persons entering and exiting the country, persons that have been in contact with cases, persons showing signs of COVID-19 and all essential workers. This has greatly helped in the timely detection, tracing and treatment of cases.

Since reopening the tourism sector last year the country has welcomed and continues to welcome tourists for gorilla trekking safaris, wildlife safaris, birding tours etc. in line with the COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures. Tourists have enjoyed primate safaris, wildlife safaris, birding tours, hiking escapades, Sight-seeing excursions among other things; while observing the COVID-19 standard operating procedures. This experience may seem different for you but several tourists have actually expressed that they loved their tours even with the observation of the SOPs; they didn’t feel like they missed anything. The best part of it, they stayed safe.

This is why we are confident that you too can tour the pearl of Africa and stay safe, if you can adhere to the COVID-19 standard Operating procedures.

But in the unfortunate event that you contract the virus, the ministry of health has set up designated COVID-19 treatment centers across the country that are well equipped to manage COVID-19. The health workers at these centers are highly skilled and trained to treat COVID-19 patients in line with the World Health Organization COVID-19 treatment guidelines and the Uganda ministry of health protocols.

So, as far as COVID-19 is concerned, we cannot guarantee that you will not contract the virus while in Uganda but we can guarantee that there are health safety measures you can follow to stay safe during your stay in the country.
