5 Days DR Congo Gorilla Trekking and Nyiragongo Hike

Day 1: Transfer to Virunga

This morning transfer to Virunga volcanoes after a short tour of Kigali city especially of the Kigali genocide memorial for those interested in learning about the 1994 Rwandan genocide. After this experience, you will contine to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu for overnight.

Day 2: Climb Nyiragongo volcano

You will have an early breakfast after which you leave for the park headquarters for briefing before starting the hike up Mt Nyiragongo. The hike takes about 6 hours depending on your speed and fitness levels. Some people tend to hike in fewer hours or take more time. The trail is through the forested areas and lava flows and the open spaces for you to enjoy the views.

When you arrive, take a view of the volcano with the red hot lava for picture moments as its best seen in the night.


Day 3: Descending

Today morning after a hopefully restful night, start the descent back to the park headquarters.

Day 4: Gorilla tracking in Virunga national park

After the hike up Nyiragongo, you will crown your experience of DR Congo with a visit to the mountain gorillas. The driver guide will transfer you to the briefing area before you can start the gorilla hike. After briefing, you will start the hike in search of the massive mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.  It takes anything from 1 hours or several before locating the gorillas after which you are allowed to stay in their presence for maximum 1 hour before you start the hike back to the briefing area.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kigali

After this amazing experience in Virunga national park, you will start the journey back to Kigali for your departure flight or back to your hotel. Enjoy a short boat ride on Lake Kivu before you proceed to Kigali.
