The Nyiragongo volcano is part of the 8 Virunga Volcanoes which are scattered in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo however Nyiragongo is fully found within the Congo bounders. It is an active volcano that last erupted in 2002 leaving several people dead including animals and property destroyed. Amidst all this damage, Nyiragongo is a beauty to behold after hiking up the volcano to have views of the same in the night when darkness covers the area.

Day 1: Transfer to Gisenyi
Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel or Airport in case you have an early flight. You will then proceed to Gisenyi and take a short boat trip on lake Kivu. Gisenyi is a border town with DR Congo on the shores of Lake Kivu and it is our preferred stop for over night.

Day 2: Nyiragongo Hike
Today morning the driver guide will transfer you to the border so that you are able to cross by 7 am and thereafter checking into the tourism office for the scheduled trek. Nyiragongo hike starts with a short briefing before the hike. You will be transferred to the Kibati ranger post for briefing. Here you will find porters to help in the carrying your bags unless you are sure of hiking with them. The hike takes anything between 4 – 7 hours depending on your speed and experience. Enjoy the views of Goma town and different vegetation covers as you hike through arriving at the top later than evening. You are advised to view the lava from the crater as its best seen in the dark.
Day 3: Descend the Volcano and transfer to Kigali
Today morning after an early breakfast, you will start the descent back to the starting point at 6.00am and continue to Goma town after which you transfer back to Gisenyi and proceed to Kigali.
