8 Days Uganda Primates Habituation Tour

Uganda is home to several primate species including the two great apes – Mountain gorillas and Chimpanzees and the beautiful golden monkeys found in the Virunga ranges. This trip will bring you face to face with these primates in the jungles of Africa – the rainforests i.e. Kibale forest, Bwindi impenetrable forest and the Bamboo sector of Mgahinga gorilla national park in the Virunga ranges.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival for your Uganda Safari

On arrival at the airport, you will find a Kagera Safaris representative waiting to pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe depending on arrival time.

Day 2: Transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park via the equator

Mgahinga gorilla national park is nestled in the southwestern corner of Uganda sharing the border between with Rwanda and Congo. The journey to the park more or less takes the entire day as you drive through small busy towns with a buzz of activities. You will drive past the famous Equator monuments where your drive guide will stop for photo moments, pick a cup of coffee and possible craft shopping.  Proceed on your journey stopping for lunch and bathroom until you arrive at your hotel.

Day 3: Uganda Golden Monkey Habituation

Golden monkeys are found in the Virunga ranges of Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. In Uganda, you find them in the beautiful Mgahinga gorilla national park.  For the golden monkeys to get a bit used to humans for tourism purposes they undergo a process called habituation where the rangers and researchers’ spend time visiting them at safe distances until they can continue to feed and do life in their midst. When you engage in golden monkey trekking you are visit the group that is already habituated and will continue to go about its daily life amidst your presence. On this golden monkey habituation, you will visit the semi-habituated group following it as it goes about its day together with the researchers and rangers. This can either be for 4 hours or the full day depending on your interest and energies. Please note that this group is not favorable for photography purposes because they will be on the move a lot more.

Day 4: Transfer to Bwindi impenetrable national park – Rushaga Sector

Bwindi impenetrable national park is home to the mountain gorillas. The drive to Rushaga sector of Bwindi forest from Mgahinga gorilla national park is short taking you through the beautiful terraced hills of Kigezi. You can choose to engage in the Batwa trail in the park before choosing to set of later in the afternoon. Alternatively, you can do a coffee trail learning more about coffee from planting, pruning, harvesting and preparing a cup of coffee.

Day 5: Gorilla Habituation experience

As you continue on your quest to learn and experience firsthand the life of these primates, today is another day add on your primate list another of those fascinating primates – the mountain gorillas. Your driver guide will take you to the briefing area where you will join the ranger guides, researchers and pick up a porter to spend the day with. You will get to spend up to 4 hours with the gorillas as you watch them in their natural habitat and see how they live and behave. After this you will return to the lodge where you will overnight.

Day 6: Transfer to Kibale Forest national park

Kibale forest national park is the best safari destination in Africa for chimpanzee trekking and habituation experience. Today you will spend part of the day traveling to this beautiful location with stopovers and detours in different depending on your interests. There is lots of great photographic moments as you drive through the beautiful hilly scenery. On arrival check in to your lodge and rest as you look forward to tomorrow’s chimpanzee trekking activity. You can also choose to do the Bigodi Community Walk to visit the village adjust to Kibale forest.

Day 7: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience

Today you will spend time in the forest for the chimpanzee habituation experience. Just like in the previous habituation experiences, together with the ranger guides you will trek in search of the man’s closest relatives depending on where they nested the previous day. You will learn about their feeding habits and learn about the chimps all round and how the habituation system works. End your day after a rewarding experience in the forest.

Day 8: Transfer to Entebbe International Airport

Today marks the end of your safari, Your driver guide will transfer you to Entebbe international airport after breakfast for your return flight in case it is in the afternoon/evening. Otherwise you might need an extra night in Entebbe to catch your flight the next day.
